Featured in this lot are Tonkawa Indian Annuity Procession Photographs near the Ponca Indian Agency, circa 1890-1891. Following their removal from Texas to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) in the 1880s, the Tonkawa were placed under the authority of federal Indian agencies (such as the Oakland Agency). The 1891 agreement with the Cherokee Commission, indicate the distribution of annuities, allotments, and supplies. One photo shows a large collection of goods. The annuity payments often included Included cash, farm equipment, food, blankets, and fabric, with food often being the most critical. The Tonkawa are a Native American tribe whose history is defined by a transition from a widespread nomadic culture in Texas to their current federal recognition as the Tonkawa Tribe of Oklahoma. Historically, they were an amalgamation of independent bands, including the Mayeye, Yojuane, and Ervipiame, who united in Central Texas during the 18th century. The four photographs were part of a photo album, remnants of the album spine on the left border. Photographs display age tanning. Photos each measure 3.875"W x 4.5"L, mounting boards each measure 6.5"W x 9"L, collective weight is U6.
