Included in this lot is an 1891 Edition of "Tropical Africa" by Henry Drummond, Charles Scribner's Sons publishers. The book is a blend of travelogue, scientific observation, and social commentary. Its key themes include the slave trade, scientific and natural history, evolution and human history, colonialism and missions, and finally geographical exploration. Frontispiece map was updated from the original edition with the other maps removed from this edition due to the change in the geopolitical landscape. Henry Drummond FRSE FGS (1851-1897) was a Scottish biologist, evangelist, writer and lecturer. He was lecturer on natural science in the Free Church College (now, Trinity College at the University of Glasgow) in Glasgow, Scotland. His studies resulted in his writing Natural Law in the Spiritual World, the argument being that the scientific principle of continuity extends from the physical world to the spiritual. The red cloth bound gold gilt hardcover is in good overall condition, fading and slight scuffing exhibited on covers. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and foxing. Measures 4.875"W x 7.375"L x .75"D, weight is 1lb.
