Included in this lot is a Turkish Ottoman Smoking Pipe, Pahlavi Dynasty, circa early to mid 20th century. Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and Snite Museum of Art, the University of Notre Dame, including African, Afghan, Indian, Mughal, Persian and Far East Asian artifacts. Despite the great variation, the smoking pipe in Asia is characterized by a relatively small pipe bowl. Tobacco is scarce in most regions. Another reason for the small bowl is that people smoke hash or other stimulants more often. In the Near East people smoke from pipes strongly inspired by the products of the Ottoman Empire. This smoking pipe features a round bottom wood bowl, with braided trim. A ribbed wood circular stem, all in a medium brown stain finish. Measures15.5"Lx 3"W.
