For your consideration is a wooden Mayan zodiac calendar sign. This piece shows inlaid, colored wood pieces in a circular form, indicating the Mayan zodiac symbols. In the center is a Mayan man formed out of inlaid wooden pieces and painted in bright colors. This piece is circular in shape and shows a stained outer rim and Mayan shapes throughout. Tzolk'in is the name bestowed by Mayanists on the 260-day Mesoamerican calendar originated by the Maya civilization of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. The Tzolk'in, the basic cycle of the Mayan calendar, is a preeminent component in the society and rituals of the ancient and the modern Maya. The back includes a label with information about each sign. This piece is in good condition overall, with very little sign of wear. It measures approximately 12" in diameter.
