This is an original presentation U.S. Civil War Model 1850 Foot Officers Sword which has been field altered into a fighting belt knife. The piece shows the correct M1850 U.S. pattern with carved grip being covered in ray skin leather with twisted copper and brass inlay having a solid brass pommel end with leaf and floral pattern and remnants of the brass hand guard. The guard was removed and the blade was shortened, likely from being broken on the Civil War battlefield. Truly an unusual and rare U.S. Civil War belt knife. Its likely from a Union solider, but possibly could have been taken from a vanquished solider by a Confederate and altered for use, as the Confederates notoriously were low on munitions and weapons. The ray skin presents well and the inlay is still mostly present. The blade is dark in color and the brass has a nice mellow coloring. Measures overall 8.5"L, guard is 4.25"L, total length is 13.5"L. Weight is 12oz.
