Featured in this lot are three U.S. Department of Agriculture fire safety posters, with two being presented by the Pennsylvania Department of Forests and Waters Division of Forest Protection circa 1958 to 1974. The first poster, made in 1974, shows Woodsy Owl holding a whistle in his hand standing next to some flowers as he wears a green hat and belt. "Give a hoot! Don't pollute" is the original motto of Woodsy Owl, an icon of environmental conservation for the USDA Forest Service. The motto was used in a 1970 student film by Williams and his collaborators, and was first used in the US Forest Service's campaign in the 1970s and 1980s. The campaign's purpose was to encourage people to think about their responsibility to keep the environment clean and healthy. The poster reads, "Join Woodsy Owl / Give a hoot! Don't pollute / Toot your hooter on pollution now!" in white lettering. This poster shows fair condition as wording and coloring has been torn off the bottom with other spots of wear. The second poster in this lot, made in 1958, shows a farmer out in his field performing a controlled burn of some wood. He has plowed a fire line to ensure his controlled burn wont spread into his field. The poster reads, "Use care in burning / Remember: Only YOU can prevent forest fires!" in red and black lettering and shows Smokey the Bear's face in the bottom left hand corner. This poster shows fair condition as it exhibits some tears and wear to the corners as well as some slight staining, no major damage noted. The third and final poster in this lot shows a large man standing in a valley holding two torches as he walks around looking to start fires. The poster reads, "Stop Him! He's burning your future!" in black and white lettering. The bottom right reads, "Pennsylvania Department of Forest and Waters, Division of Forest Protection". This poster shows good condition overall with some wear from its age and use over the years but no signs of obvious damage are noted. The posters measure 18 1/2" L x 13" W.
