Early Model 1879 Springfield .45-70 caliber cavalry saddle ring carbine, serial number 141004*. This is a fine early carbine made in 1880 with all the correct features including sling ring bar, trap in butt plate for cleaning rods, “C” marked carbine rear sight, etc. The stock is also correctly stamped witha rectangular cartouche with the Springfield inspector’s initials “SWP” (Samuel W. Porter) over the matching manufacture date of “1880”. There is also the correct “P” in a circle inspection stamping car touche behind the trigger guard on the bottom of the stock. This is a U.S. issued and inspected carbine made for the Indian Wars. This early carbine has the “star” stamping after the serial number indicating that it was returned to the arsenal for repairs or updates. Most of these carbines saw very hard service on the Western Frontier and those that were returned usually had seen the most service in the Indian Wars. This carbine has the correct 1873 dated breech block with steel firing pin.. It retains the correct clear “U.S. Springfield” marked lock plate with eagle motif, correct carbine stock and all correct barrel “VP” over “eagle head” proof marks on the 22 inch barrel. This Springfield carbine retains excellent mechanics and a bright sharp rifled bore and very solid stock and forearm with no cracks or chips. Thebutt plate is the correct style with a sliding door where cleaning rods and a headless shell extractor were stored. The barrel shows fine deep blue as does the trigger guard. Overall, a very fine fully inspected Indian Wars cavalry Trapdoor Carbine. This is the standard model that was used in every major engagement from the Battle of the Rosebud and Battle of the Little Bighorn to Wounded Knee. A superior most attractive example with solid wood, correct features and a wonderful historical past! This carbine is in excellent condition. Serial Number: 141004. This firearm qualifies as an antique and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
