Featured in this lot is this Underwood Standard No. 5 typewriter circa 1900 - 1930's. The typewriter features a wonderfully and professionally crafted construction that shows a painted black frame and keyboard in the front of the typewriter. The No. 5 typewriter is the most successful typewriter design in history. The Underwood typewriter is the creation of German-American inventor Franz X. Wagner. The name "Underwood" comes from John T. Underwood, an entrepreneur who bought the company early in its history. Underwood Models 3, 4, and 5 were made from late 1900 until late 1931 or early 1932. The No. 5 was the quintessential Underwood. Millions of these machines were used by secretaries, journalists, government officials, and writers throughout the first half of the twentieth century. Later Underwoods were superficially modernized, but retained the same basic mechanism. The name "No. 5" was even given to some of these later typewriters, in honor of the model that made the company's fortune. The condition of this Underwood typewriter is preserved with some of the sticking to the keys of the typewriter and wear and paint on the typewriter but otherwise is in preserved condition. The measurements of the typewriter is 9 7/8" x 17" x 13 3/4". The collective weight of this typewriter is 31lb 6oz.
