Featured in this lot are three paper currency notes from The United States of America and The Confederate States of America circa 1862 and 1874. Two are from The Confederate States of America and one is from The United States of America. The first is a twenty-five cent bank note from The United States of America circa 1874 and shows a portrait of Robert J. Walker on the left. Robert J. Walker was the Secretary of the Treasury (1845–49) during the Mexican War, and Governor of Kansas Territory (April–December 1857). The bank note reads, "United States Series of 1874 / Twenty-Five 25 Cents / Fractional Currency". The second, from the Confederate States circa 1862, is a third series, uniface, two dollar bank note. It shows the South striking down the Union at the top of the note in the center while a portrait of Judah P. Benjamin, the Secretary of War for the Confederate States, sits to the left side of the note. The final bank note is from the Confederate States and was redeemable for fifty cents in bankable currency at the Office of the County Treasurer when presented in sums of five dollars. These were issued by local banks at the time as the Confederate Treasury was trying to get more notes and currency into circulation as the coins were being hoarded by many locals for their metal values. The note reads, "No. 27123 Staunton, Virginia, May 25, 1862 / 50 The County of Augusta Will pay to bearer, at the office of the County Treasurer, Fifty Cents In bankable currency, when presented in sums of five dollars / Receivable in payment of all county dues". The notes show wear from their age and handling over the years showing creases, tears and fading but no major signs of damage is noted. Notes are in good readable condition. They measure from 2 5/8" L x 6" W to 2 1/8" L x 3 1/2" W.
