Offered for bidding is this attractively framed and matted collection of three Civil War Generals' signatures. The framed collection consists of a hand-written and signed letter from General Miles (this is two-sided--glass on both sides--frame showcase both sides), along with a typed version and a later photograph of General Miles; a cut signature with rank, by General Sheridan; and a portion of an envelope addressed to a Reverend Talcott of Bangor Maine with a franking signature by O.O. Howard. Each of these men fought in the Civil War for the Union and had been promoted to rank of General. Each also served in the later "Indian Wars" General Phillip Sheridan (1831-1888) had been instrumental in Lee's surrender; later in life, he was instrumental in the development and protection of Yellowstone National Park. General Oliver Otis Howard (1830-1909) fought in the Army of the Potomac, in which he lost his right arm. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism at Fair Oaks. Howard was appointed Commissioner of the Freedmen's Bureau after the War; in 1867, he played a part in the founding of Howard University--a historically black university. General Nelson Appleton Miles (1839-1925) was also a Medal of Honor recipient during the Civil War. He went on to play a major roll in the Indian Wars. He finally retired at age 64, in 1903. He was one of the last surviving generals who had served on either side of the Civil War. Miles City, Montana is named for him. This impressive collection of three signatures is impressively displayed in this 31.25" x 13.25" black frame with midnight blue mat. This piece is in excellent condition.
