The lot features two hat pin insignia one marked USS with crossed arrows and the other 7 with cross cavalry sabers. The first shows a USS with crossed arrows; an exact example was documented as being a circa 1890 "USS" uniform hat insignia for United States Army Native American Indian "Scout". In 1866, General Order No. 56 called for the enlisted of Indians as Army Scouts, later in 1890 these pins were given to those enlisted scouts in acknowledgment of their service (see the example from Early American History June 2017 and Heritage Auction June 2018). Second in the lot is a commonly seen U.S. Cavalry hat pin insignia with a "7" across the center. Similar example in this form and being thin stamped were documented as being used in the late 19th to early 20th Century. These type of insignia was used well into the Korean War. Both hat insignias are stamped from thin metal, one brass and the other likely tin in a silver like color. The age and origin of these insignia is unknown, please example the images for your own representations of age and origin. The brass insignia measures 2 5/8"W by 1 3/8"H with four loops soldered on the back for mounting to the hat. The USS insignia is 1 5/8"H by 2 5/8"W with four belt over brass thin rods / pins soldered on four mounting to a hat.
