Featured in this lot is this pair of 1980s Uvex Sportstyle Take Off Shield sunglasses made in West Germany. Philipp M. Winter was born in Fürth im Wald on May 3, 1898, and attended Fürth High School in Bavaria. Following the First World War, he began his career as an export merchant, focusing on Portugal and Spain. After founding a modest distribution company in Barcelona, he returned to Fürth, Bavaria, and established the "Optische-Industrie-Anstalt Philipp M. Winter", a handcraft-oriented enterprise in Fürth/Poppenreuth. At the 1936 Summer Olympics, Philipp M. Winter provided protective eyewear to several athletes. After successfully overcoming the problems of the early years, the facility proved too small, and the company relocated to Salzstrasse in Fürth, where it remained for many years. Consumer products demand separate brands and brand management, thus Rainer Winter established the "uvex" brand name in 1956, based on an abbreviation of the quality seal for lenses - Ultra Violet EXluded. Since then, all sports and leisure products have been, and continue to be sold under the uvex brand. This pair of sunglasses features a stylish, 1980s retro look showing bright, vivid colors of violet and hot pink on the frames and lens. The glasses are marked reading, "Uvex / Uvex Take Off / Triflex Anti-Fog / Made in W. Germany". The glasses come with an extra pair of black / dark grey lens and a black felt carrying case. They are stored in the original plastic case with the original instructions on how to change the lens and the tag has not been removed from the sunglasses. Also attached to the sunglasses is a hot pink colored, adjustable head strap. The glasses show good condition overall with some slight wear present from their age. The nose bridge foam has been cut off but remains in the container. The glasses measure 5 3/4" L x 6 1/2" W x 2 3/4" H, while the container measures 3 7/8" L x 6 1/4" W x 2 1/8" H. It weighs under 6 ounces.
