Offered in this lot is a Venetian "Skunk" Eye Glass Trade Bead Necklace, circa Early to Mid Century. The necklace displays a wonderfully and professionally crafted multi-bead construction of a black base cross design with raised yellow dots bordered by red and white on a wound grass strand. Often called "Eye Beads," they were traditionally believed to protect the wearer from the "Evil Eye" or general harm. Venetian beads are some of the most rare and prized beads in the world. Sources show that they have been used as trade beads as far back as the 14th century. Venetian millefiori beads played a transformative role in Native American cultures, evolving from luxury trade items and status symbols to integral components of traditional regalia. While often associated with West Africa, these "thousand flower" beads were widely traded across North America by major entities like the Hudson's Bay Company historically renowned for dominating the Canadian fur trade and controlling vast territories known as Rupert's Land.
