For your consideration is an early Venetian Skunk or Roman Eye trade bead necklace. Each bead is uniquely shaped with white, brown, red, blue, and yellow design. Skunk Beads are modernly referred to as “Eye Beads” –a name that derives from the distinctive white spots on the outer skin, which are created by applying molten white glass to a cooled wound base. Skunk Beads were, and continue to be, produced using the old Venetian marveling technique, which involves winding molten glass around a long steel tube and then rolling it across a flat surface to create a rounded shape. There are forty nine beads on this necklace. Two of these beads are actually dark blue; the rest are black based and one bead is a feather design. The beads are rectangle or cylinder shaped and average 1/2" long and 1/4" X 3/8" wide. This necklace measures approximately 32" in circumference. These beads and necklace are in good condition, with minor damage expected from age.
