This is a phenomenal circa 1750 American Indian Pipe Tomahawk. The piece exhibits a true mid-18th Century forged iron tomahawk head with all the correct typical features of heads from the period including the large teardrop eye, the ample bulbous bowl with bold forged moldings, heavy large head with small curved blade with slight slope towards the rear. The head shows a triangular engraving on both sides with diagonal lines and punch dot. The front thick edge of the blade is marked heavily with possibly a blacksmith touch mark (hallmark) which shows two rectangular bars holding three dots each with a crossed sideways “X”, possibly a British Flag. This could be representative of a makers mark or likely an inspection mark. The tomahawk also shows heavy curved forge moldings and a slight rear spur in a square form. The top of the eye, just below the forge molded chevrons curves inward toward the bowl, a unique attribute possibly from wear but not seen on many examples. The head is secured to the solid wood haft with a gasket of hide which is still present. The haft handle is finely finished of a high presentation grade quality showing pewter inlay triangular teeth at the rear of the eye, pewter lattice diamond double bar inlay just behind the eye inlay which is later replicated at the base of the gripping area along with being inlaid at the smoking tip in the same lattice and triangular pattern. The tomahawk haft has a slight curve and has a median edge, bevel, felt on the entire bottom side. The center section of the wood is finely carved with a diamond or diagonal rectangular or diagonal square pattern relief carved in long bands on each side and the top, a truly artist and fine attribute. Very similar to two examples in the Harold L. Peterson 1965 book “American Indian Tomahawk” on page 102 and 103 figure / photograph 110 and 111, both being circa 1750 with pewter inlays from the William O. Sweet and William W. Shemerluh collections. Provenance: From a historic Eastern Montana American Indian Collection, where the piece was found to be an authentic original, one of the finest collections of American Indian weaponry and antiquities in Montana. The piece measure 17”L with a head that is 5.75”L by 2.75”W blade by 1 5/8” thick. This is truly a fine well preserve condition authentic circa 1750 tomahawk which exhibits a nice honest patina from age and use, heavy high-quality head with engraving and presentation grade original haft.
