The lot features an original Victorian Chatelaine set of sterling silver tooth pick holder and pencil. These would have been displayed on a Chatelaine, which was a decorative belt hook or clasp worn at the waist with a series of chains which would hold household appendages such as scissors, thimbles, watches, keys, vinaigrette, tooth pick holders, and pencils. This piece dates to the Victorian era of circa 1890’s. The first example in the collection is a sterling silver mechanical pencil which shows a fluted end which would hold a stick of graphite and an impressive floral hand engraved / worked casing which ends in a loop which would have attached to the chatelaine. The second piece is a whimsical tooth pick (toothpick) holder which shows a hand etched design with original chain and is also in sterling silver. The tooth pick holder measures 3”L x ¾”W. The pencil measures 4.25”L x ½”W.
