Presented in this lot is this Antique Late Victorian Gustavian Style Console Table, circa late 1800s to early 20th century. The table has a classic, timeless elegance with sculptural, vase-shaped legs that are a prominent design element. The legs feature a distinctive, thick shape that widens from a narrow base and flares outward, resembling an upturned trumpet or a vase. A restrained Swedish interpretation of French Neoclassicism is the primary influence. Key characteristics of Gustavian furniture found here include the clean lines, the architectural form, and the turned or tapered legs. The technique of using turned, spiral, or bobbin-shaped legs has roots going back to the 17th-century Baroque period and was extensively used again during the Victorian era. While inspired by these antique styles, the natural, unpainted wood finish and overall appearance of the table in the image are very common in "farmhouse" or "rustic" furniture.
