Included in this lot is this Vintage Côte d'Ivoire Handcarved Guro Wood Mask. The Guro people, also known as the Gouro, are a West African ethnic group, an ethnolinguistic group in the central belt of Ivory Coast, specifically along the western shores of Lac de Kossou in the valley regions of the Bandama River. They are known for their rich cultural traditions, including their distinctive masks. Sacred masks are used during gatherings, funerals, and celebrations to honor protective spirits. Guro masks are known for their unique artistry, combining human and animal forms and featuring elaborate details like almond-shaped eyes and sculpted features. This carved wood mask featured a red-crested, red beak and red-footed bird with a white coloured body "headdress". The bird is perched on the black coloured forehead of the mask. The forehead is coloured red, the eyes pink. The side "wings" feature geometric triangular designs of green and blue colours. The mask has Guro, Baule, and Senufo influences. Sides are perforated for wearing, The mask is in good overall condition, repair to bird "headdress" noted. Soiling from age and use exhibited, chipping noted to edges. Measures 7"W x 20"H x 6"D, weight is 2lb, 6oz.
