This is a rare, vintage and iconic snake bracelet by renowned Zuni Pueblo silversmith Effie Calavaza (1927-2019, Zuni). The bracelet is crafted from sterling silver, signed and marked and set with Sleeping Beauty Mine Turquoise and Branch Coral with Effie’s unmistakable and renowned “snake” pattern showing the coiling snakes over the Turquoise and branch coral stones going around the stones with two snake heads having branch coral snake eyes. Effie C. Calavaza (1927-2019) was a master silversmith born in 1927 in Zuni, New Mexico as Effie Lankeseon. She lived her entire life at Zuni Pueblo. She married Juan Calavaza (1910-1970), who was a renowned silversmith in his own right, and taught her the artform. Until her husbands death in 1970, she signed her own work with her husband’s signature, “JUAN C. -ZUNI”, later signing “EFFIE C. ZUNI", as this piece is correctly signed. Her signature style depicts snakes winding around the central gemstones, typically using the sand-cast silver method. Snakes are an important symbol in Zuni healing and fertility rituals. This bracelet features serrated bezel mountings of three Sleeping Beauty petit point cabochons and two branch coral petit point cabochons with Effie's signature snake pattern of a snake with inlay branch coral eyes and adorned with silver beads. Effie's hallmark is stamped on the backside of the bracelet, "EFFIE C. ZUNI". The bracelet is in beautiful condition. Measures 6.5" inside circumference including 1.25" opening, .375"W x 2.375"L x 1.875"D, collective weight is 19 gms.
