For your consideration is this Navajo Diné Yei Vintage Wool Rug Runner, circa early to mid century, 1930s-1940s. The rug features five female Yei figures (square heads) on a cream coloured field, the outside Yei figure is the protective rainbow guardian, it's lower body is a border on three sides for the other Yei. The Yei figures are dressed in alternating colours of rust, light and dark brown. Geometrical design width-wise borders are located at either length end, alternating the same colours. Navajo Yei rugs feature stylized stick-like figures of Navajo Holy People (Yei) derived from sacred sandpaintings, known for their distinct front-facing, often square-headed (female) or round-headed (male) figures, usually bordered by a protective rainbow guardian representing a protective path, and are a popular art form, distinct from the profile-view Yeibichai rugs depicting ceremonial dancers, though both stem from medicine man Hosteen Klah's innovation around the 1916 era. Yeibichai rugs depict the masked dancers impersonating the Yeis in profile, showing movement and ceremony, often led by the Talking God. The Navajo rug has an excellent tight weave and vivid colors; it is in good overall condition, slight stains noted. The rug measures 30"W x 59"L, weight is 2lb, 6oz.
