Zuni jewelry is known for its high level of detail and meticulous craftsmanship, with each inlay chip carefully cut, shaped, and set. The peyote bird, also known as the water bird, and represents renewal of life, rain, rivers, and distant travel/vision. Its symbolism is tied to peyote ceremonies and can be seen in art, such as earrings, where the shape of the bird can also correspond to elements of the ceremony itself. The symbol is widely used in Native American art, particularly in jewelry made by artists from various tribes, including Zuni artists who helped popularize it in the 1960s.
