Included in this lot are Vintage Plains Indian Hand Carved Steatite Pipes, (2), circa 19th century. The oldest tobacco pipes of the North American Indians have a simple tubular shape made of stone. Steatite, also known as Soapstone, was used by Native Americans for bowls, cooking slabs, art carvings and other objects including smoking pipes, a practice that continues today. Steatite is a comparatively soft stone and bone, antler and other stones were used to carve and shape it. The soapstone's low heat conduction allows for prolonged smoking without the pipe heating up uncomfortably. Both pipes are in nicely preserved condition. One pipe measures 5.5"L x 1"W x 1.25"H, second is 5"L x 1.375"W x 1.75"H. Combined weight is 1lb.
