Presented in this lot are Vintage "The Mentor" magazines, circa 1915 and an article written by Stephen T. Mather, first director of the National Park Service, from Munsey's Magazine, circa 1917-1926. The Mentor (The Mentor Association) was not really a magazine, more like a small portfolio of educational prints (photogravure on one side with text opposite) on a different topic each month. "Learn One Thing Every Day." The Mentor was an American eclectic educational magazine billed as "a wise and faithful guide and friend", published in the early 20th century. Most of the issues were on a distinctive theme, and written by a guest author and the editorial staff of the magazine. The Mentor began in 1913, and in 1930 it merged with World Traveler magazine to become Mentor-World Traveler, which ended in 1931. The Mentor Association was established to increase interest and knowledge among the public in the areas of art, literature, science, nature, history and travel. The association published a magazine twice monthly, each dealing with a different topic and often written by a recognized authority of the day. Munsey's Magazine revolutionized the popular magazine market by proving that a general magazine could be successful at ten cents in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Director Mather's article, "Our National Parks for the American People" is a call to the citizens of the United States to go see the nation's national parks. Under his direction, the US more than doubled the land in the park system and made the parks accessible to the people. Many consider Mather to be the "father of our modern national park system." The article includes original copyrighted photographs of Yellowstone Park, Glacier Park, Yosemite, Sequoia Park, Mesa Verde Park, Mt. Rainier Park, and, Crater Lake Park.
