Featured in this lot is this Virgil Earp addressed Tombstone, Arizona Territory Sheriff's Office envelope circa 19th century; Provenance: From the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum in Tombstone, Arizona, ex-John Gilchrease. The envelope features a wonderfully and period correct letter envelope stamped "Tombstone and Patagonia Express Line" and is addressed to the "Care of Virgil Earp, Sheriff's Office." The sender name is unrecognizable from fading but was set to Virgil's Sheriff's office in Tombstone, Arizona Territory. The piece was authenticated and comes from the John Gilchrease historian and former Gilchrease museum collection. The condition of this Virgil Earp envelope is preserved with some browning and fading to the writing on the letter with browning consistent with age but otherwise is in preserved condition. The letter also shows a U.S. George Washington three cent postage which is stamped, this postage is documented as being earliest issued in 1879 and issued into circa 1883/4.
