For your consideration is this limited edition (out of 500) reproduction lithograph originally drawn by Alfred Edward Mathews in the late 1860s, reproduced and published by the Historic Urban Plans in 1974. Alfred Edward Mathews was born on June 24, 1831, in Bristol, England. His family immigrated to the United States in 1833 and settled in Rochester, Ohio, where Alfred grew up. Mathews worked as a traveling bookseller in the 1850s, visiting Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire. When the Civil War broke out in April 1861, Mathews went to his father's Ohio home and served in the Union Army's Battery A, 1st Ohio Artillery. He was assigned to the 31st Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served for three years, taking part in the Siege of Corinth and the battles of Stones River, Lookout Mountain, and Mission Ridge. During his military service, Mathews created topographic maps and depicted battle scenes. These sketches were later printed as lithographs. In the summer of 1865, Mathews lived in Nebraska City, Nebraska Territory. He created various sketches of the city. He departed Nebraska City in the fall of 1865 and landed in Denver on November 12. The Rocky Mountain News reported his arrival on November 13, 1865. Mathews moved east throughout the winter of 1866-1867, returning to Denver in May 1867 to sketch. In the fall of 1867, he journeyed to Montana to do drawings that would subsequently be included in the book Pencil Sketches of Montana, a lithograph collection. Mathews became unwell in the autumn of 1874, possibly from appendicitis. He died at home on October 30, 1874. This reproduction lithograph shows a raised view of Virginia City, Montana in the late 1860s. The town looks alive with people going about their daily lives in the Gold Rush town. The lithograph reads, "A.E. Mathews Del. & Lith., N.Y. / Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1868 by A.E. Mathews in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the Southern District of New York / Virginia City / Reproduced in 1974 by Historic Urban Plans. Ithaca, New York from a lithograph in the Amon Carter Museum of Western Art. Fort Worth, Texas. This is number ___ of an edition limited to 500 copies". The lithograph shows good condition overall with slight wear present but no major signs of damage noted. The art measures 11 1/8" L x 20 3/4", while the entire lithograph measures 15 1/2" L x 24 1/2" W. Weighs under 6 ounces.
