Featured in this lot is this oil on canvas painting called "A Sioux Indian," by artist Walt Wooten born in 1939. The painting features a wonderfully and professionally crafted oil on canvas construction that features a cameo of a Sioux Indian man with a feather in his braided hair with adornments braided into the braids and a pipe bone choker around his neck. The artist signature is seen in the top left hand corner and the back is marked as follows: This is an original Walt Wooten - purchased 9/03 from his studio when still unfinished - A Sioux Indian - copyright Walt Wooten. Walt Wooten has been painting throughout his life. Ten years ago he began to focus on bringing the vivid images of Native American Peoples to canvas. He grew up in Chicago, the son of a minister, and the grandson of a full-blooded Choctaw Indian. His own Native American heritage, the topic of many dinner conversations and boyhood dreams, nourished his fascination with Native American Culture. Walt's childhood was spent drawing horses and copying photographs of saddles from the Sears catalog. He won several scholarships in school for his artistic talent. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago and Roosevelt Universary. He also studied with Don Baum at the Hyde Park Center. The Southwestern influence has been a major theme throughout his career. All of his work shares startling color and uncluttered composition. Through influences of John Singer Sargent, Milton Avery, and Fritz Scholder, his contemporary style has evolved. The condition of this oil on canvas is good with some wear tot he top rim of the gilt paint on the frame but otherwise shows good overall condition.
