Featured in this lot is this oil on canvas painting called "Pawnee w/ Peace Medal," by Walt Wooten born in 1939. The painting features a wonderfully and professionally crafted oil on canvas construction that features a cameo of a Pawnee Indian male with a feather in his hair and hoop earrings in his ears and shows a "Peace Medal" handing on his chest from a trade cloth loop around his neck. The artist signature can be seen in the top left hand corner of the painting. Walt Wooten has been painting throughout his life. Ten years ago he began to focus on bringing the vivid images of Native American Peoples to canvas. He grew up in Chicago, the son of a minister, and the grandson of a full-blooded Choctaw Indian. His own Native American heritage, the topic of many dinner conversations and boyhood dreams, nourished his fascination with Native American Culture. Walt's childhood was spent drawing horses and copying photographs of saddles from the Sears catalog. He won several scholarships in school for his artistic talent. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago and Roosevelt Universary. He also studied with Don Baum at the Hyde Park Center. The Southwestern influence has been a major theme throughout his career. All of his work shares startling color and uncluttered composition. Through influences of John Singer Sargent, Milton Avery, and Fritz Scholder, his contemporary style has evolved.
