Featured in this lot is this 1890s Waterbury Clock Company miniature brass carriage clock. Chauncey Jerome established the Waterbury Clock Company in Waterbury, Connecticut, in 1857, and it has a long history in American clock manufacturing. Prior to changing its name to the Waterbury Clock Company in 1866, the organization was formerly known as the Jerome Manufacturing Company and manufactured wooden clocks. The company, known for its creativity, created the "dollar watch," a low-priced pocket watch that increased access to timepieces. The business switched to wristwatches at the beginning of the 20th century, which helped to increase their popularity. In 1930, the United States Time Corporation was created through a merger with the Ingersoll Watch Company as a result of ownership changes. The Waterbury Clock Company, however, was forced to close its Waterbury factory in the 1960s due to declining sales and foreign competition. Despite being shut down, the company's legacy lives on because it made a significant contribution to American horology and helped revolutionize timekeeping. The clock shows a brass construction with beveled glass and a white porcelain face showing black colored numbers. The clock face reads at the bottom "Waterbury Clock Co., U.S.A." in small black lettering. When the back is opened, it shows the company name and its patents dates, along with the winding mechanism. The clock is in working condition and ticks when wound up. The clock shows good condition overall with some slight wear but no signs of obvious damage. The carriage clock measures 1 5/16" L x 2" W x 2 1/2" H and weighs 237.8 grams.
