This lot feaures "When Law Dulls the Edge of Chance" by CM Russell, 1915, lithograph. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police held a special place in Charles M. Russell’s heart. Their colorful exploits and heroic deeds made them a likely subject for some of his paintings. While in Alberta in 1888, Russell first encountered the “Red Coats” and was quite impressed by their presence. After seeing them again in 1912, at Calgary, the artist was inspired to paint them. "When Law Dulls the Edge of Chance" was the last of a series of four paintings about the Mounties always getting their man. While on a visit to Canada in 1919, the Prince of Wales saw the work at an exhibition and was fascinated by the Mounties. He purchased a ranch in High River in southern Alberta before his departure. His new neighbors of High River purchased this painting and gave it to the Prince of Wales as a gift. Charles Marion Russell (1864-1926) was many things: consummate Westerner, historian, advocate of the Northern Plains Indians, cowboy, outdoorsman, writer, philosopher, environmentalist, conservationist, and not least, artist. Charlie Russell completed approximately 4,000 works of art during his lifetime. He was the first "Western" artist to live the majority of his life in the West. For this reason, Charlie knew his subject matter intimately, setting the standard for many western artists to follow. This lithograph was most likely published by either Brown & Bigelow of St. Paul, Minnesota or The Moscrip Picture Company of Great Falls, Montana circa 1915-1930. The lithograph is in good overall condition, no obvious marring noted. The gold gilt trim hardwood single matted frame is in good overall condition, scuffing noted to frame edges, repairs observed to frame corners. No other obvious marring observed. Visible art measures 12.5"L x 4.75"W, and the frame is 19.5"L x 11.5"W x .75"D.*
