Featured in this lot is this collection of California Joe (Moses E. Milner) & Wild Bill Hickok ephemera from Earle R. Forrest, N.H. Rose and Tombstone Western Heritage Museum. Earle R. Forrest, an excellent novelist and photographer, focused on the American Southwest and frontier people. He wrote California Joe with his friend Joe E. Milner. This lot features reproduction photos of Wild Bill Hickok, the grave of California Joe, California Joe laying in a field and California Joe posing for a photo in a studio from the Famous Rose Collection. "California Joe" primarily refers to Moses Embree Milner, a frontiersman, prospector, and famous scout for the US Army and General Custer, known for his marksmanship and storytelling. Born in Kentucky in 1829, Milner became known as "California Joe" after prospecting for gold there. He was murdered in 1876 after a quarrel with a companion, Tom Newcomb. James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok was born in 1837, and was a sharpshooter and American folk hero who became a symbol of rugged determination. Hickok's life was filled with adventure and danger, including working as a stagecoach driver, lawman, scout, and gambler. He earned his nickname for his expert gun skills and became famous for his shootouts with outlaws like the McCanles gang. The photos show good condition overall with slight wear present from their age and use over the years but no signs of damage is noted. Museum edition.
