Included in this lot is the First Edition of, "The Dark Horse" by Will James, 1939, with illustrations by James. James final novel, this is the story of two horses, one a pure pedigreed thoroughbred and one a thoroughbred of the wild, who escape their owner as colts and wander the wilds of the western United States. William Roderick James, "Will", was an acclaimed Canadian-American artist and writer of the American West. He is known for writing "Smoky the Cowhorse", for which he won the 1927 Newbery Medal, and wrote numerous "cowboy" stories for adults and children. His artwork, which predominantly involved cowboy and rodeo scenes, followed "in the tradition of Charles Russell", and much of it was used to illustrate his books. In 1992, he was inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.This green cloth bound book is in good overall condition, the front cover and spine are stamped in black, intact pages are deckled, age tanning noted. Original paper dust jacket has tears but also mostly intact there is no other obvious damage noted. Measures 5.75"W x 8.5"L x 1.25"D
