This is an original large format albumen silver photograph boudoir card from circa 1880’s by William Henry Jackson. The photo is of a View of Georgetown Loop Devil’s Gate High Bridge in Clear Creek County showing a narrow gauge railway over Clear Creek, that runs between Silver Plume and Georgetown, Colorado. The back is marked, “Clear Creek Canon, Georgetown and Vicnity, Colo.” with a description beneath and “Robt. M. Davis, Publisher Denver, Colo.” And at the top “Jackson Photo Published by Davis.” This is truly an iconic image showing the two railroad locamotives caring the passenger trains across the high bridge named Devil’s Gate on the Georgetown Loop. The bridge spans Clear Creek and if you look closely you can see the Engineer and the passengers posing for the pictures. An iconic W.H. Jackson image. The only other example offered on auction was the mammoth example offered by Cowan’s in 2010 for $5,000-$6,000. Provenance: From the personal collection of Francoise Perriot (Françoise Perriot), noted historian author of the West and Native Americans. Perriot’s published works include such books as “Les Indiens et La Nature” (Indians and Nature) 2017, “La Conquête du Far West” (The Conquest of the Wild West) 2007, “Les Indiens d'Amérique du Nord” (North American Indians), “Guide Bleu : Etats-Unis Ouest Americain” (Blue Guide: United States West America). This piece and others come from her time collecting in Montana and the West, her book “Les Indiens et la nature” is one of the most notable in France documenting photographs of the west.
