This is an original photograph of Frozen Lake Near James’ Peak from William Henry Jackson and dating to circa 1879. The photograph is of a very large size and is an authentic original done in Albumen Silver Print. This image of Frozen Lake is shown in the Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado near James’ Peak. William Henry Jackson (1843-1922) was a member of the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871 which was an extensive exploration of the Yellowstone Region. It was Jackson's photographs of the expedition that led to Congress establishing Yellowstone as the first national park. This is a wonderful collection of Jackson's early works in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The bottom left corner of the photograph is hand written, “FROZEN LAKE Near James’ Peak along with being marked by the photographer and dated 1879. The photograph shows an exceptional composure and subject matter and is in fine condition. W.H. Jackson’s larger Albumen silver prints are exceedingly rare with such examples showing the Western landscape selling for large prices such as the Veta Pass photo that sold for $19,000 at a Swan Galleries sale, the Panorama of Leadville, Colorado that sold for $10,000 at the same Swan Galleries sale, and the Williams Canon W.H. Jackson that sold at Heritage Auctions 2013 sale for $6,500. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art in Bozeman which was both part museum and gallery. The visible photograph area measures 13”x10”. The frame measures 21.75”x18.75”. This is framed in a wonderful solid hardwood gilt frame showing a considerable age. The piece shows the original Sundog Gallery sticker / tag on the reverse. This piece was found to be an authentic original by the experts at Heritage Auctions and valued at an estimate of as much as $2,000.
