Winchester 1873 .44-40 caliber exceptionally scarce and desirable early Second Model Saddle Ring Carbine, serial number 82637, manufactured in 1882. Survival rates for 1873 Saddle Ring Carbines are much smaller than for rifles, with the rule of thumb being that the earlier the carbine the less chance it has survival to the present time. The Second Model 1873 was only made for approximately three years between the serial numbers of 31000 to 90000. This distinct variation is easily identified by having the dust cover rail attached to the receiver top by screws. The later third model has the dust cover rail made integral with the receiver top. Second Model Saddle Ring Carbines are especially difficult to locate on the collector market today as fewer carbines were produced than full length rifles. Typically, carbines saw much harder use than most rifles making them actively sought after by collectors today. The Model 1873 was Winchester’s first firearm to use more powerful and reloadable center fire ammunition. The 1873 was a favorite of the Texas Rangers as well as just about all characters on both sides of the law in the Old West. In almost every saddle scabbard on almost every cattle drive from Texas to Montana would be found a Winchester Model 1873 Carbine. The 1873 was also popular with all sides throughout the Mexican Revolution as well. This fine example features an even, uncleaned, naturally aged gray/brown patina. The correct “MODEL 1873” tang marking is sharp and clear. The markings on the standard 20” barrel are visible, but typically worn. This Winchester features a fine walnut carbine butt stock with matching forend. The receiver retains the dust cover and on the bottom of the receiver the mellow brass lifter has not been polished or cleaned. There is fine blue remaining on the loading gate. The action functions correctly and even the bore retains good rifling throughout. The carbine is complete with correct and original front sight matched with a two-leaf folding express rear sight. This is a very fine example of a rare 2nd. Model Winchester- “The Gun That Won The West-” that would be a prize for any firearm or Old West collection.
