Winchester 1892 octagon barrel rifle in desirable .38-40 caliber, serial number 304905, made 1905. One of the larger chamberings in the Browning designed 1892, the .38-40 cartridge which was introduced in the 1880s by Winchester and later adapted to Colt revolvers, remains still popular today. Nearly all early 1892 rifles saw hard frontier usage and when found today are almost always in severely used and often abused condition. This example retains excellent screw heads indicating that
has not been taken apart. All Winchester markings on the 24” octagon barrel are sharp and clear as are the upper tang markings including the correct “MODEL 1892” stamping. This fine Winchester retains good lightly aged barrel blue with deep blue on the magazine tube. The receiver also retains fine blue on the bolt with thinning aged blue on the balance. This rifle was fitted with a buckhorn rear sight, and small blade/bead front sight. It has an exc. walnut stock and forend with very tight wood to metal fit. The bore is surprisingly fine for such an early production rifle. The 1892 Winchester was Jonathan Browning’s answer to an updated repeating lever action rifle built to handle shorter cartridges. It was Winchesters replacement to the older Model 1873. Basically a scaled down version of the powerfully built big Model 1886, the 1892 was so successful that many are still in use today. This is an extremely attractive 120 year old example in a sought after caliber that is in far better condition than most 1892s of this vintage encountered today. This rifle weighs 6lbs 14oz. Serial Number: 304922. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
