Winchester Model ‘90 in rare .22 Long Rifle caliber. The Model 1890 pump rifle was another John Browning design purchased by Winchester. It was originally chambered in .22 Short; .22 Long; or .22 Winchester Rim Fire (WRF) calibers. As popular as the now common .22 Long Rifle was and still is, Winchester didn’t chamber the Model ‘90 for this caliber until 1919. Even then, it was seldom chambered and today an original Model ‘90 in .22 Long Rifle is very difficult to locate and rarely encountered. This rifle with serial number 715766 was made in 1926 and is in lovely original condition with receiver and barrel serial numbers matching. The factory original barrel has the correct firing proof mark which is important as many, if not most, Model 1890 rifles in .22 Long Rifle have the “Mail Order Replacement Barrel” proof mark which looks like a football with a “P” inside. This factory original .22 Long Rifle marked barrel retains fine blue and shows clear Winchester markings including the .22 LONG RIFLE marking. Similarly, the magazine retains fine blue with only normal wear to some of the bottom portion. The receivers on 1920s vintage Winchesters are notorious for having the blue “flake” as the steel hardening process was changed during this time and did not hold the finish as well as earlier guns. This example shows fine original blue on the receiver sides and bolt with only some normal handling wear on the tangs and edges. The walnut stock and forend are both excellent and show minimal handling with tight wood to metal fit. The barrel sights are correct and original consisting of a small buckhorn rear sight with a blade/bead front sight. The action is tight with a strong safety half-cock on the hammer. The bore is fairly bright. Model 1890s in .22 Long Rifle are rare in any condition. This is a highly desirable superior condition Model ‘90 in rare .22 Long Rifle Chambering. The rifle weighs 5lbs 12oz. Serial Number: 715766. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic firearm, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
