For your consideration is this 1942 Great Northern Railway portrait advertisement print done by Winold Reiss. One of the main advocates of the Art Deco movement, Winold Reiss, painted Indian portraits that were popular with Great Northern Railway president Louis Hill (1872–1948). At least eighty of the paintings that Hill acquired over the years ended up on the covers of Great Northern calendars, brochures, and dining menus. Completed portraits were dispatched from Browning to the Great Northern Railway headquarters located in St. Paul, after being wrapped in wax paper. Reiss and the advertising director, W.R. Mills, made the decision as soon as they arrived as to which painting should be reproduced and which should go into the permanent collection. Later, only reproduction rights were negotiated. The piece shows the Blackfeet Warrior, Take-The-Gun-Strong, posing for a portrait painting as he looks towards the viewer. He has his hair done in two skinny braids and is wearing a leather hide jacket with colors of red, dark blue, yellow and light blue. He is holding a bundle of large bird feathers and has his eyes slightly closed. The bottom of the print reads, "Take-The-Gun-Strong - Blackfeet Warrior - Glacier National Park - Portrait By Winold Reiss" and "©1942 Great Northern RY. St. Paul, U.S.A.". The piece has been set in a gold colored frame and sits behind glass to preserve its condition. The piece shows good condition overall with little to no wear present. The visible art measures 20 3/4" L x 12 7/8" W, while the entire piece measures 22 5/16" L x 14 3/8" W.
