This is a rare, circa 1780-1800 early Eastern Woodlands Pipe Tomahawk attributed to the Iroquois of New York state. The piece is from the Ex-Collection of Fred Crissman and Albert Miller along with being pictured in Fred Crissman’s 2008 book, “Plains Art” on page 8, a book that wonderfully features his wide collection of American Indian art and weapons. The piece shows a cast brass head with a dove-tailed steel insert bit, making it a usable piece. The hast is believed to be original to the piece and has a nice, deep shiny patina and one wimple row of brass trade tacks near the head. There is a small pierced hole near the smoking tip that likely held a drop of beadwork or feathers at one time. Authentic, early examples such as this carrying a nice collection history are getting harder to come by. The head measures 7 inches long by 2 1/4 inches wide across the bottom of the blade. Overall, the piece measures 19 inches in length.
