For your consideration is this beautiful 1938 Wright & McGill fly rod called, "The Californian" numbered 685. Drew McGill and Stan Wright founded Wright & McGill in 1921, and was the parent company to Eagle Claw. The company was originally founded to create high-quality fishing flies, but by the 1940s, they had moved into rod making. At the end of WWII, Wright & McGill purchased the Goodwin Granger Company from Granger's widow in order to expand their fly, lure, and hook offerings. The Wright & McGill Rod Co. was established in May 1946. Wright & McGill produced a variety of bamboo rods over the years, including the Aristocrat, Stream and Lake, and Victory. Later Granger rods were prominently identified as Wright & McGill products. The early 1950s bamboo embargo halted cane imports from Southeast Asia's Gulf of Tonkin. The varnished Granger bamboo fly rods had their final appearance in 1953. Wright & McGill continued to sell their remaining inventory of varnished bamboo Granger rods until around 1956. Wright & McGill, like most bamboo rod producers, offered fiberglass rods, but they were late compared to other manufacturers. The introduction of graphite rods a short time later meant that Wright & McGill fiberglass rods had a brief existence. This two piece rod shows a nice bamboo construction featuring silver colored ferrules and yellow wraps tipped with beige. The bottom metal piece is marked reading, "Pat. Apr. 12, 1938 / Pat. No. 2.114.107 / Made By Wright & McGill Rod Co. / Denver, Colo., U.S.A". The base of the rod is marked with black ink reading, "The Californian By Wright & McGill #685 81/2 ft.". The rod measures 8 1/2 feet when put together and weighs approximately 4 ounces. The fly rod shows good condition overall with little wear present and no signs of obvious damage present.
