For your consideration is this WWII era Swiss Army, Pony Fur military rucksack / backpack (Tornister) amde by Karl Gehring Stein of Appenzell Ausserrhoden in 1944. The Swiss Army pony fur rucksack, often called a Tornister, was a primarily WW2-era (1930s–1940s) pack designed for mountain infantry. These durable packs used pony/horsehair hide over canvas for waterproofing and ruggedness, often featuring leather bases and straps, manufactured by Swiss saddlers. This rucksack is marked on the top reading, "Karl Gehring Stein /RH / 1944". Not much information is found on the maker of the bag but it is know he was contracted by the Swiss army for make bags like this and other wartime means such as leather scabbards for knives and other items. The bag is constructed from pony fur, leather and canvas showing two leather straps on the back used for carrying and a front pocket. When opened, it features a large dual flap pocket lined with canvas and cloth. The back of the pack also shows two leather pads, used to support the lower back and add comfort. Various leather straps connect to metal buckles to secure flaps and pockets. It shows good condition overall with wear present from its age and use over the years, but no major signs of damage is noted. One back strap is disconnected, but could be easily repaired. It measures 7" L x 12 1/2" W x 19 1/2" H and it weighs 5 pounds and 14 ounces.
