Featured in this lot are Zambian Lozi Hand-Woven Baskets, late 20th century. The Lozi people, also known as Balozi, are a Bantu-speaking ethnic group native to Southern Africa, the largest population is in Zambia. The Lozi people of Southern Africa are known for their basketry, which is a vital part of their culture and economy. Lozi baskets are traditionally woven from the roots of the Makenge bush, which can grow to over three meters tall. The roots are boiled, dyed with natural pigments, and then handwoven by women using a spiral coiling technique. The eight (8) baskets have varying colours and designs, suitable for daily use or as wall hanging art. Baskets are in good overall condition. Smallest measures 8.75" diameter x 1.25"H, largest is 14" diameter x 2.75"H. Combined weight is 4lb, 6oz.
