Included in this lot is an Antique Zulu/Boer War Slade-Wallace Oliver Pattern Wood Canteen / Water Bottle, circa 1871. Provenance: Tombstone Western Heritage Museum, Tombstone, Arizona. An "Oliver pattern water bottle" is a historic, cylindrical wooden water canteen, originally introduced by the British military in 1871 for use by soldiers during the Anglo-Zulu War and later conflicts. It features metal bands and a screw-top filler, designed to be carried in a leather cradle over the shoulder. It was part of the broader Slade-Wallace pattern of military equipment. The leather cradle is an Italian pattern style. This wooden canteen has "OLD BANFF WHISKY" branded on the face. The Tombstone Western Heritage Museum presented an ever-expanding collection of 12,000-plus objects related to Tombstone and the broader Old West. At the heart of the museum were original papers, photos, firearms, furniture, clothing, conveyances and other artifacts relating the history of the town and its citizens. A central display case was devoted to Earp family photos and keepsakes, including snapshots of brothers Virgil and Wyatt and a C.S. Fly–stamped photograph of Josephine Earp at age 18. One shelf held a locket of Josie’s, with facing photos of her and husband Wyatt. Above it a personal letter from Josephine, the canceled envelope addressed in Wyatt’s hand. Adjacent display cases held official and personal papers, possessions and photos (many by Fly) of such Tombstone icons as prospector and town founder Ed Schieffelin, first Mayor John Clum, gunsmith S.L. Hart, the aforementioned Earps and their McLaury and Clanton nemeses. Here, too, were mementos of the nameless everymen and women— miners and cowboys, actors, gamblers, saloon girls and prostitutes—who lived and died within blocks of this corner. The attached Tombstone Western Heritage Museum label, "BRITISH CANTEEN 1871 Original Italian Pattern Sling", museum code, "LO74". The wood water bottle is in very nicely preserved condition, metal bands at the top and bottom exhbit rich patina. Leather cradle strap is intact, weathered and cracked. Leather is coloured black, the colour indicated for rifle regiment use. Measures 3"W x 4.25"L x 7.5"H, weight is 12oz.
