For your consideration is a Zuni Native American Sun Face inlaid sterling silver squash blossom necklace. This squash blossom necklace is constructed of silver beads with sterling silver aglet tips. The necklace is a fantastic example of Zuni craftsmanship. The image depicts an intricately inlaid onyx, turquoise, mother of pearl and branch coral design with silver bead accents. The design represents the sacred Sun Father. The Zuni have always honored the Sun’s vital role in the cycling of seasons and the success of crops, recognizing that the Sun’s warmth sustains life, enables growth, and brings joy and prosperity to the people. The symbol’s round motif depicts the Sun with a forehead split down the middle to reflect the eternal balance between sunrise and sunset. Rectangular eyes and a round mouth complete the face, and the whole is encircled by feathers that radiate outward like sunlight. The squash blossom showcases six blossoms on either side of the necklace mirroring the sun face design seen on the Naja. The gems are set on a sterling silver backing. The piece was signed at one time but shows an applied hallmark that has broken. The squash blossom measures 18 ½” when unclasped.
