Featured in this lot is this hand colored engraving of W.P. Hodges drawing titled, "The Chase of the Roebuck", engraved by H. Alken & R.G. Reeve, published in London in 1834 by Thomas Mclean. The Chase of the Roebuck depicts a traditional hunting scene: a roebuck (small deer) runs ahead while packs of hounds and mounted hunters follow it across open terrain. The engraving depicts the active chase, with the animal in flight, riders on horseback charging ahead, and the dogs stretched out mid-run, emphasizing speed and eagerness. The bottom of the engraving is marked reading, "From Original Drawings by W.P. Hodges, ESQR / The Chase of the Roebuck / Dedicated by permission to E. M. Pleydell, Esqr. many years Master of a Pack of Roebuck Hounds. By his Sincere and obliged Friend W.P. Hodges / London, Published October 1st, 1834 by Thos. Mclean 26, Haymarket". The piece is set in a black frame and sits behind glass to preserve its condition. The visible artwork measures 18 1/4" L x 25 1/2" W, while the entire piece measures 19 7/8" L x 27 1/8" W x 3/4" D. It has a total weight of 5 pounds and 2 ounces.
