This lot includes a 1856 copy of “Life, Explorations and Public Service of John Charles Fremont.” By Charles Wentworth Upham. John Charles Frémont or Fremont (January 21, 1813 – July 13, 1890) was an American military officer, explorer, and politician who became the first candidate of the anti-slavery Republican Party for the office of President of the United States. During the 1840s, when he led four expeditions into the American West, that era's penny press and admiring historians accorded Frémont the nickname The Pathfinder. The book has a brown linen cover with gold embossing on the spine which shows some fading. The pages have some foxing but the book is in good condition for its over 160 years. The book measures 7 1/2" X 5" X 1 1/4".
