Offered in this lot is a 1871 Ulysses S. Grant Indian Peace Medal. The dies for this medal were engraved by Anthony Paquet. The Ulysses S. Grant Indian Peace Medal shows a new redesign of the reverse. One side displays a portrait of President Grant facing to the right, with a Native American Peace Pipe and an Olive Branch below, and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA LIBERTY JUSTICE AND EQUALITY", “LET US HAVE PEACE”. The design of the reverse is beautiful, though it has little to do with Native American Indians. The reverse side design has a border of Thirty-Six Stars surrounding a Bible, agricultural implements and a globe. Around the outside reads, “ON EARTH PEACE - 1871 - GOOD WILL TOWARD MEN.” This medal design also has the distinction of being the only Indian Peace medal upon which the name of the President does not appear. Although records are scarce for non-silver striking of this scarce medal, the Bronze Grant medals show up far less frequently than any of the other Bronzed/Copper medals. The medal is hung on a necklace of red-white-heart beads and yellow French cross beads with one black bead. This rare Medium Size Indian Peace Medal was struck in bronze at the United States Mint in Philadelphia prior to 1879 for purchase by collectors for their set of 'presidential' medals." The medal measures 64mm and is the origional size produced for the Grant medal. Given their distribution at the height of the Indian Wars on the Plains, an awarded Grant Indian Peace medal is a historic relic beyond compare. This attractive medal has light wear from actually having been worn as would be expected.
