The lot features an original circa 1890 fully beaded puberty ball from the Sioux Native American Indians. The piece features an old trade clothe canvas stuffed and sewn around the entire outside area with period correct 19th Century glass trade seed beads, sewn with trade thread, in a geometric and crazy pattern. The ball shows a chalk white and black cross on each end with bands extending from each cross arm around the entire ball and crazy multiple color pattern inbetween each section; overall shows most bead colors from the era: greasy yellow, greasy blue, greasy green, cobalt, red white heart, sky padre light blue, and more. Puberty balls were typically highly beaded and used for a girls puberty rite. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce was also the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery, this piece is directly from the collection.
