The lot features four rare original photographs by Frank Jay Haynes showing Fort Lincoln, Dakota Territory Gatling Gun Battery and Blockhouse in circa 1872 from the C.M. Russell Museum Great Falls, Montana and John Kleinschmidt collections. The photographs are albumen and silver gelatins showing the Gatling Gun Battery and the Blockhouse at Fort Lincoln, Dakota Territory (which is located around where Mandan, North Dakota is today). Frank Jay Haynes (1853-1921), known as F. Jay or "the Professor" to almost all who knew him, was the official photographer of the Northern Pacific Railway and of Yellowstone National Park. He was a professional photographer, publisher, and entrepreneur from Minnesota who played a major role in documenting through photographs the settlement and early history of the Northwestern United States.
Provenance: From the John Kleinschmidt collection which was on loan to the C.M. Russell Museum from 1987 to 1993 and included in the "The Cowboy West: 100 Years of Photography 1992-1993 exhibit. The albumen photographs are signed on the reverse, "1872 On top of the hill John Kleinschmidt Mandan, N. Dak.". Well kept and preserved condition for its early age and measures 4.5"W x 5.5"L each, silver gelatin enlargements are 8"W x 10"L each.
