For your consideration is a Rare Late 18th Century French Provincial Louis XV Walnut Bombe Shaped Commode. The eighteenth century is considered the Golden age of French furniture. It was during this time that the most refined and beautiful Royal furniture was made in the busy Paris workshops of Europe's elite cabinet makers. Three-board serpentine top and front, an elaborate handcarved and shaped acanthus leaves skirt apron with pierced cartouche, stands on cabriole legs decorated with acanthus leaves ending with escargot feet, with acanthus leaves and rocaille carved at the top. Scrolled Bombe arched side panels with handcarved and shaped acanthus leaves skirt apron with pierced cartouche. Two front carved Bombe molded drawers with hand-carved acanthus leaves, serpentine shaped top beveled and molded Dupont edge, original brass drawer pulls and matching escutcheons hardware. The curved forms, lightness, grace, comfort and asymmetry of this period replaced the more formal, boxlike and massive furniture of the Louis XIV style. Excellent quality with superb craftsmanship, the commode is in wonderfully preserved condition, insect damage to backboards, some splits, heavy scratches to three-board top, nicely finished front and sides. Measures 26.5"D x 53.25"W x 35"H and weighs 168 pounds.
