Featured in this lot is this 1874 1st edition of, "The Pioneers and Patriots of America - Captain William Kidd" written by John S. C. Abbott and published by Dodd & Mead in New York. This is a biography of Captain William Kidd, a notorious pirate who operated in the late 17th century. Kidd's life is examined in the book, from his early years as a merchant seaman to his eventual capture and piracy trial. Abbott presents Kidd as a complex character who was a ruthless pirate as well as a successful privateer. He talks about Kidd's early days as a merchant seaman and his later participation in privateering operations against French ships. Additionally, Abbott describes Kidd's regrettable decision to turn to piracy and his ultimate demise after being apprehended by British authorities. The book explores the political and economic circumstances that made piracy a realistic option for some sailors at the time, providing a broader historical context for Kidd's life and career. In addition, Abbott looks at the social and legal repercussions of piracy in the 17th century as well as how the public and the authorities perceived pirates. The book shows a brown/orange front cover with black and gold gilt embossed images of a branch and leaves and a Native American man next to a tipi. The title is in black embossed lettering and the authors name is in gold gilt lettering. The spine features, the title, the authors name and the publishers in gold gilt lettering as well. The book shows good condition overall with some wear to the front and back cover, as well as the spine. The back cover is loosely connected. The interior pages are in good condition as well, with little foxing throughout the book. The book measures 7 3/8" L x 5 1/8" W x 1 1/8" D.
